Second National Family Planning Day 2015 

Marie Stopes Nepal and Family Health Division (FHD) jointly with other stakeholders like Family Planning Association of Nepal, Ipas Nepal and PSI celebrated the Second National Family Planning Day on 18th September, 2015 in National Health Training Center (NHTC), Teku Kathmandu. Sunaulo Parivar Nepal, the United Population Fund, Dr. Saraswati Paddhe, Dr. Jeevan Bhandari, prof. Dr. Kokila Vaidya and Bishnu Shrestha for their outstanding contributions they have been providing in the field of family planning in the country. It is a proud moment for Marie Stopes Nepal as its implementing partner Sunaulo Parivar Nepal was felicitated from the Government of Nepal for the remarkable benefaction in achieving sexual and reproductive health objectives and targets through its services all over Nepal. 

The Chairperson of Sunaulo Parivar Nepal, Ms. Kamala Thapa received the felicitation from government of Nepal on behalf of Marie Stopes Nepal. 

The contribution was praised by the member of National Planning Commission Dr. Yagya Bahadur Karki, Secretary at Ministry of Health and Population Mr. Shanta Bahadur Shrestha and Director General of the Department of Health Services Mr. Sendendra Raj uprety by presenting Certificate of Appreciation, shawl and bouquet. 

On this very optimistic event, Dr. Karki addressed that family planning is an important today as it brings prosperity to families, communities and society. He also added that Nepal has been supporting very well for the promotion of this cause till date and the investment requirement in the family planning alongside health, education and gender empowerment can help a nation to develop and secure the benefits of the demographic dividend. 

Accordingly, FHD Director Dr. Pushpa Chaudhary enlightened the audience about the progress made in the field of family planning till date and some of the strategies initiated to reach the rural marginalized. She also uplifted the investors to support in this good cause of family planning as recommended by the Cost implementation plan 2015-2020 recently drafted with UNFPA’s guidelines. To brace the event, Dr. Chaudhary also emphasized on the significance of the micro planning for increasing contraceptives prevalence rates in some of the districts.

In 2014, Marie Stopes Nepal/Sunaulo Parivar Nepal generated 411,287 CYP and an estimated 85,000 unsafe abortion was adverted from our services. An estimated 126 thousand unintended pregnancies were averted from our services- this includes the impact of women still using a Long Acting Permanent Method from past years. Similarly, Meri Saathi Free Helpline serves over 3000 clients over the phone counseling on Sexual and Reproductive Health. Sunaulo Parivar Nepal also runs Youth-friendly SRH information and service project called “Rockets & Space” serving nearly 2 million youths.

Marie Stopes Nepal believes that the global community needs to make universal access to family planning a higher priority and recognize that access to family planning is a human right. : Adults and youth, wherever they live, should be able to decide the number, timing and spacing of their children.
