Am I eligible for a medical abortion?

The medical abortion (abortion pill) is also known as early abortion. At Marie Stopes we offer medical abortion from the time we can confirm an intrauterine pregnancy (a foetus inside the uterus). This is from about 5 weeks up to 8 weeks.

The medical abortion treatment is given in two stages, and involves taking two different medicines. The first tablet you take is called Mifepristone. It blocks the action of the hormone progesterone, which is needed to maintain the pregnancy. The second tablet is called Misoprostal and this can be given 48 hours after the first tablet. This causes the contents of the uterus to be expelled. You can go home after each tablet is given.

Not all women are suitable for a medical abortion, although they may still be suitable for a surgical abortion. You may not be eligible for a medical abortion if you have any of the following:

A suspected ectopic pregnancy.

A history of heart disease, high blood pressure, liver or kidney disease.

Are taking long-term corticosteroids.

Have an IUD in place which will not be removed prior to treatment.

Adrenal failure.

Are taking anti-coagulants or have any hemorrhagic disease of porphyria.

Have a poorly controlled inflammatory bowel disease.

Suffer from muscular dystrophies, myasthenia gravis, myotonic dystophy or sickle cell disease.

We'll take a full medical history from you and may need you to have some tests done to ensure your safety. If you have serious medical issues, we may suggest it's safest to have your abortion done in a hospital setting. Most women can have their abortions done safely through a Marie Stopes clinic. Regardless of your medical history, we suggest you phone us so we can discuss your options.
