What is Surgical Abortion?

A surgical abortion involves the pregnancy being removed vaginally by a trained and certified service provider. Marie Stopes offers this service with or without an anaesthetic - your choice will be discussed at consultation.

Early surgical abortion (up to 12 weeks of pregnancy)

At this stage, a gentle suction method is used to remove the pregnancy from the uterus. This is a very quick and simple procedure, taking less than five minutes to perform. You can choose to have this procedure with a general anaesthetic, conscious sedation, or no anaesthetic. Sometimes, if you're young and have not had a pregnancy before, we advise you have some medication prior to the procedure to dilate the cervix. This will be given 2-3 hours before the procedure and you will remain in our centre for this time.

Surgical abortion (13-19 weeks of pregnancy)

If your pregnancy is more than 15 weeks advanced, you may be given some medication to prepare your cervix for the procedure. This will be given to you 2-3 hours before the surgery and you will be cared for at our centre during this time. At this stage, you'll be given the option of sedation or a general anaesthetic. The procedure to remove the pregnancy will take between 10-15 minutes. You will need to stay at our centre after the procedure until we feel you are well enough to go home, and we advise you have somebody with you.

Late surgical abortion (19-24 weeks of pregnancy)

At this stage of pregnancy the treatment is performed in two separate stages. You will be asked to arrive at the centre early in the morning for the first stage, which involves preparation of your cervix to cause it to gently dilate over a few hours. There is no need to have an anaesthetic for this part of the treatment. The second stage, to complete the abortion, will take place later that day and you will be given will take a general anaesthetic. We request that you are accompanied home and have someone with you overnight - please see our aftercare section for more details.
