Marie Stopes Nepal has initiated a novel concept to increase the information about safe use of medical abortion pills using mobile health technology.
Objectives of the project:
* To assess the uptake of free mobile phone based MA support information to the women
* To examine the effectiveness of mobile phone-based MA support information on compliance of MA dosing regimen.
* To examine the impact of mobile phone based MA support information on the rate of complications and incomplete MA among women.
* To determine the impact of mobile phone based MA support information on the uptake of PAFP among women
With the introduction of MA in 2009, women have access to MA pills, however they do not have the correct information on its doses, effectiveness, or steps to be taken in case of complications. Rampant irregular use of MA pills has led to a rise in the post abortion complications, especially incomplete abortion (UCSF/CREHPA 2012) (SPN, 2013). The intervention in this study is mobile phone-based MA support information which will be delivered to the women once they voluntarily register in the system. The SMS will will provide information on dose, route, timing of MA, expected side effects, potential minor discomforts, complications from MA, and referral points, how to make sure the abortion is complete, follow-up and PAFP information.
