HPV DNA Test

Cervical cancer is a major health concern for women in Nepal, with an estimated 4,000 new cases and 2,500 deaths occurring each year.

It is the second most common cancer among Nepali women, after breast cancer.

It is important to note that cervical cancer is highly preventable through regular screenings and vaccination. And, to increase awareness about cervical cancer and help more women get the prevention, they need timely screening and treatment.

HPV-DNA testing detects high-risk strains of HPV, which cause almost all cases of cervical cancers. HPV DNA tests are nucleic-acid-amplification-tests (NAAT).

Screening should start from 25 years of age in the general population of women, and regular screening with a validated HPV test every 3 years.

Women living with HIV should be screened from 25 years of age, and require screening more frequently, every 3 years (3).

The general population of women who have screened positive on an HPV DNA primary screening test and then negative on a triage test are retested with HPV DNA testing at 24 months and, if negative, move to the recommended regular screening interval. For women living with HIV the interval will be 12 months (Women who screen positive with HPV DNA test are assessed for eligibility for ablative treatment.

Ablative treatment includes cryotherapy and thermal ablation. Both treatments are equally effective, safe, and can be performed in an outpatient clinic.

The assessment for eligibility is done by application of 3-5% acetic acid and assessment of the cervix with naked eye or magnified view.

Eligibility will be determined depending on the type of transformation zone, the location, and size of the lesion.
